About Evergreenhillwhisper
A small, passionate team dedicated to finding the quietest, most restorative corners of rural Japan — and sharing them with the people who need them most.
We Started With a Single Overgrown Path
Evergreenhillwhisper began in 2019 when our founder, Tomoko Ishida, took a week away from her Tokyo architecture practice and stumbled upon an unnamed valley in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture. There was no signage, no mobile signal, and no other visitors — just the sound of a river and the particular quality of silence that only deep countryside can offer.
She spent four days there, drawing nothing, planning nothing, simply watching the light move across the hills. She returned to the city a different person. And she began quietly searching for more places like it — not to keep them to herself, but to share them with others who were ready to be changed by stillness.
What We Believe In
Three principles guide every decision we make about which properties to curate and offer to our guests.
Genuine Quiet
We seek properties where true silence is possible — not just the absence of loud noise, but a quality of peace that settles the nervous system and clears the mind. It is the kind of quiet that heals.
Honest Curation
Every property we list has been personally visited by a member of our team. We do not rely on photographs alone. We sleep there, walk the surrounding land, and ask ourselves honestly: would we return? Would we send our family?
Rural Stewardship
We work with hosts who genuinely care about their land and their communities. A portion of every booking contributes to our Rural Landscape Fund, supporting the maintenance of local walking trails and hedgerow restoration projects.
How We Find and Choose Properties
Our curation process is rigorous and personal. We do not accept submissions or commissions.
We Search Slowly
Our team spends time driving quiet backroads, walking local trails, and talking to farmers, foresters, and longtime residents. We listen for stories about hidden corners — places where people feel at peace.
We Visit In All Seasons
We return to promising properties multiple times — in spring, summer, autumn, and winter — to understand how each place feels across the year. A quiet retreat in summer might be magical under snow, or transformed by autumn light.
We Sleep There
Before we ever feature a property, a member of our team stays overnight. We experience the sounds of the night, the quality of the morning light, the way the land connects you to something larger than yourself.
We Partner, Not Commission
We work only with hosts who share our philosophy of stewardship. We don't aim to maximize bookings — we aim to protect the quiet and maintain the character that makes each place special for those who visit.
The People Behind Evergreenhillwhisper
Our team of six is spread between Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nagano. We have backgrounds in architecture, ecology, hospitality, and slow journalism. What unites us is a deep respect for the natural landscape and a belief that the countryside holds answers that the city cannot provide.
We communicate with all guests personally — you will always speak to a human being who knows the property you are enquiring about. We remember your preferences, follow up after your stay, and believe that hospitality is built on genuine relationships, not automated systems.
