The Otagi Valley Project
Three years ago, we partnered with a retiring farming family in the mountains of Kyoto Prefecture to transform their historic thatched property into one of our most beloved retreats. Working with local craftspeople and using only traditional materials, we preserved the building's 180-year-old character while making it genuinely comfortable for modern guests.
Today, the Otagi Valley Farmstead welcomes guests year-round and has become the primary income for two neighbouring families who provide local guiding, fresh produce, and traditional craft workshops.

Everything You Want to Know
We recommend booking at least four to six weeks in advance, particularly for weekends between April and November when our most popular properties fill quickly. That said, we do sometimes have last-minute availability — simply contact us and we will do our best to find something wonderful for your dates.
Many of our rural properties are pet-friendly — particularly the farmhouse and cottage retreats where well-behaved dogs are warmly welcomed. Each property listing clearly indicates pet policy, and we can filter your search by pet-friendly options. We ask that you mention any pets at the time of enquiry.
Every Evergreenhillwhisper booking includes a curated local guide with recommended walks, nearby villages, markets and seasonal highlights; a small welcome basket of regional produce placed in the property before your arrival; clean linen and towels; and a direct contact number for our guest support team throughout your stay.
Can I visit a retreat before booking?
For guests considering an extended stay or a corporate retreat, we can arrange a preview visit to select properties. Please contact us to discuss. For standard leisure bookings, our detailed photography, video walkthroughs, and honest written descriptions are designed to give you a very clear picture of what to expect.
We offer a full refund for cancellations made 14 or more days before arrival. Cancellations between 7 and 13 days before arrival receive a 50% refund or the full amount as a credit towards a future booking. Cancellations within 7 days of arrival are non-refundable, though we will always try to reschedule where we can. We strongly recommend travel insurance for added peace of mind.
